Everything You Need to Know About the Model United Nations Committees

Model United Nations Committees is the image of all the procedures of a United Nations conference that can help you encounter a conference without attending it. Everything in the MUN replicates the real councils and the conference is the same so that students can experience it. For students of colleges and universities, it is considered an extracurricular activity that will help them build their confidence.

Every student in the MUN is a representative of the assigned country and he/she present the policies and viewpoints of the respective country. The student must take care of the point that he/she is not allowed to give their opinion but to impersonate the country's national and international policies in detail. In this way, MUN helps the students to develop a diplomatic opinion and welcome new opportunities.

There are three main Model United Nations Committees whose sessions are held in the MUA:

General Assemblies (GAs):
These Model United Nations Committees are the largest committees of all three types and they can affect the 6 general assemblies like UNESCO, WHO, DISEC, Legal and Administrative and Budgetary. The decisions that they declare, cannot be changed.

Specialized Committees
This type of Model United Nations Committees does not affect other committees of the United Nations but sometimes they have a little stimulation on the special committees. Also, they can affect other meetings of the representatives, including Senate and International Olympic Committee. These special committees are lower in rank than the General Assemblies.

Crisis Committees:
These committees implement the members to react to events effectively. They can stimulate anything including Historical Security Councils and futuristic rebel meetings. These committees are the smallest among others in the MUN.

People in a Model United Nations Committees session do not use pronouns for themselves as they are not representing their own selves and do not give their opinion. They speak on behalf of the country and they only follow the parliamentary procedure. Other points included in the parliamentary procedures are given below:

  • There is the point of orders that can be used if you are having a doubt about the rules of the procedure you are going to follow.
  • If you don’t understand any point of the committee or any other aspect about them, points of inquiry can be used to get an answer to your question.
  • If you are having any discomfort or are unable to hear properly, you can use points of personal privilege.
  • If you want to move into the voting procedure already, or into the moderate caucus you can use motions. Also, if you want to suspend or start a debate, motions can be used. The uses of motions can vary from conference to conference.

The last part of the committee session is voting, and you can invoke it by using motions. Papers in the form of drafts move among the members and they are asked to vote against or in favor of the draft. If the draft is approved, it becomes a resolution.
